You know me as tcpip. This site is my site, discussing stuff that I dabble in and think about.
Who am I? I am an Indian, Bengali, living in India, 40+, male. I have engineering degrees. You will guess some of this if you read some of my notes here and there.
Broadly, I intend to talk about my key activities and hobbies, which are, as of now
In photography, I guess I'll put up a few images, and write whatever bits and pieces come to my mind about clicking and cameras.
Under audio, there are two distinct but related themes: music itself, and listening to music on audio systems at home. I am no musician, so I will not be writing about making music. On the subject of music, I guess I'll be writing about the music that I like, and experiences I've been through related to music listening. And on the audio front, I guess I will be writing about my explorations in the world of music reproduction technology and the building of audio systems -- in particular, amps and speakers.
Besides these, like a true Bengali with delusions of grandeur, I will be writing about life, the universe, and everything, under Conversasions.
Just a Hello...and seek help to buy a high end music system.
Dear Mr. X,
I do not know your name, can you please enlighten us all?
It was just yesterday that I was standing at another music shop, and the owner assured me, that the Bengali people have the best possible knowledge of sound.
Reading above, that you are a Bengali gentleman yourself, helped me gain confidence.
Ok, I am a 36 yr old businessman from Delhi, I hate why that word sounds like I am an uncle.
I just recently developed a desire to buy a decent quality audio system, and like you, went scrounging around Delhi's music system sellers, ebay, and God knows where else.
I looked at Yamaha and liked Marantz more for the receievers, I listened to Marantz and liked Harman Kardon more, in the end, I am confused.
The confusion is greater in speakers, I listened to JBL and liked Jamo more, I listened to Jamo and somebody played me something on a Vienna Accoustic floor mounts, yet again confused.
I have the following queries:
1. 80% of my use for the high end system would be for music, I aint that much of a movie-played on high volume-home theatre-surround sound-nonsense buff.
2. I am looking for a decent receiver, a pair of nice floor mounts (column speakers is what I want-like Jamo 606) and a nice sub in the 250-300 range.
3. I dont know 1 bit of technical stuff abt speakers.
4. I want the sound to just fill up my room or listening space, with deep bass and clarity, without my having to raise the volume to wake up the neighbours.
5. Of course, if I am spending so much money, I do want to have enough juice in my system to wake up the neighbours, when I am drunk or when finally some loser customer of mine pays me back and I am in high spirits.
6. Finally, as of now, I will not spend more than Rs. 1 Lakh.
Can you help?

Really useful articles
Hi, I find your articles on selecting an audio system really useful. I've been on a search of my own for some time now and am quite confused really as to what home system to buy. I heard a system by Genelec: 2 6020 active speakers, and a sub woofer and i loved the sound.I tend to move around every two-three years with my job and I loved the fact that the system is quite compact. What is your opinion about this system or Genelec on the whole? It costs a little more than a lakh.
Thanks
Prashant
Sorry, no idea :(
Dear Prashant,
Sorry, but I have no idea about Genelec. I suggest that for feedback about specific systems, you should check out the forums at www.hifivision.com. That's the only discussion site I know where hi-fi audio enthusiasts discuss things from an Indian perspective, and most of the discussions are pretty good. In fact, some of the comments I saw there, plus some prodding from a friend, made me write my pages about choosing a hi-fi system. :)
